The
Charlton was built in 1894 by the famed Rochester architect,
J. Foster Warner. One of Mr. Warner's characteristic designs
is seen in the diamond-shaped treatment of many of the windows
in the house.
|
|
The
original owner was Emmett H. Jennings; a carriage maker
and amateur whip. Mr. Jennings owned and ran a stage coach
line between Rochester and Avon.

Postcard reads:
"Residence of E. H. Jennings, Avon, N.Y."

The
second occupant of the home was Charles Z. Case.
Mr. Case , born in England, lost his father in the Titanic
disaster. Charles, in later years, an executive with Eastman
Kodak Company, invented the "V-mail" system used
during World War II to send letters to service personnel in
Europe and the Pacific. Mr. Case and his family lived at Charlton
until his death in 1965.

Charlton
is rich in tradition and history; for it was once the starting
point of the Genesee Valley Hunt, the oldest fox hunt in the
nation.
